Advanced Placement English III

Students will spend a considerable amount of time in the analytical study of non-fiction: letters, autobiography, persuasive essays, critical reviews, scientific writing and political discourse with a smaller amount of time devoted to examining place and setting in fiction.  Students will write frequently, and their writings will be shared with and analyzed by their peers and the instructor.  It is expected that students develop a working vocabulary of literary terms and devices used in the examination of writing,  and dissecting the syntax and diction of a work in order to understand the author’s intent/tone.  Students must take the national AP exam in May at their own expense.

Advanced Placement English IV

Students will spend a considerable amount of time in the analytical study of the various genres.  They will be expected to spend time in reading literary criticism of assigned works so that they can expend their abilities to critically approach a work on their own.  Students will also write frequently, and their writings will be shared with and analyzed by other students and the teacher.  It is expected that students develop critical standards for the appreciation of any literary work and increase their sensitivity to literature.  Students must take the national AP exam in May at their own expense.

English I

This course provides a foundation in formal writing and in the study of literature.  Emphasis will be placed on composition through the study of anthologized literary models supplemented by instruction and practice in grammar, vocabulary, paragraph writing, journalizing and basic research writing.

English II

Students will study the various aspects of world literature as found in their anthologies and selected novels, review the fundamentals of grammar and the mechanics of writing, and study vocabulary appropriate for the grade level.  Compositions will include creative writing, essays, and research papers.  Study skills will be reinforced through curriculum, emphasizing preparation for college.

English III

A literature anthology of American works is supplemented by a reading list.  Vocabulary is presented within the reading and a workbook appropriate for the grade level.  Speaking and essay assignments are given.  Writing and grammar rules are reviewed.  Students are required to write a full researach paper using a variety of sources.

English IV

An anthology of British works is supplemented by a reading list.   Vocabulary is presented within the literature.  Principles of effective speaking are taught.  Opinion and analysis papers are assigned regularly.  Thesis development is stressed.

Honors English I

This course follows the format of the regular English I class; however, more emphasis will be placed upon critical analysis.  More supplemental reading and individual research will be required of students.

Publishing

This course focuses on practical and aesthetic considerations for the publication of two annual traditional volumes – in the first three/quarters, the school yearbook and in the fourth quarter, the school literary journal. Students are expected to design, develop, edit, sell, finance and distribute both publications. An after-school component to the course is mandatory, as significant out-of-class time is required to create quality publications which showcase the Santa Fe community. Additionally, students should be comfortable using a computer and working both collaboratively and independently. Enrollment is limited to seniors.

Speech/Debate

This course will provide instruction in the fundamentals of formal and informal oral communication, including techniques of group discussion, effective listening, and public speaking. The latter half of the course will provide instruction in the fundamentals of argumentation and problem solving. There is instruction in thinking, organization of facts, and speaking skills. Students will practice research skills related to debate topics and also participate in frequent debate situations. This course counts toward the fine arts graduation requirement.
