Inside Preps: Santa Fe Catholic’s Dickerson’s Low Key Approach Working

THE LEDGER

Santa Fe Catholic’s Billy Dickerson doesn’t yell much, an oddity considering he’s a football coach.

“He’s more of a sit down and kind of talk to you person kind of guy.” quarterback BJ Knauf said Wednesday. “He won’t embarrass you.”

Dickerson’s approach seems to work well.

The Crimson Hawks are 4-1 heading into their game against Agape Christian this Friday.

More importantly, players are taught to be as disciplined as they are on the field in the classroom.

If students are having trouble in classes and Dickerson sees grades falling, he’ll get with parents and teachers to see what needs to be done to get the student on course.

And even if a player has a 2.0 GPA — the standard to play high school sports — Dickerson doesn’t allow them on the field until grades go up.

“We take care of school first,” Dickerson said.

“If we see kids that are really struggling we try to get them right before we get them back out there.”

Five of Dickerson’s players are in honors or Advanced Placement classes, or both, including Knauf, wide reciever/defensive back Jake Dotson, running back/linebacker/kicker Robert Aranda, running back/linebacker Jory Frasco and lineman Alex Dry.

Dickerson is not always no-nonsense, though.

He won the “Crying Towel” award last year, an award given to the funniest coach at a football kickoff event held every August by the Lions Club.

Dickerson chides his players, too, including Knauf.

“I’m always doing something stupid in the game – like after I make a tackle I’ll do some stupid celebration, a karate chop or something,” Knauf said. “He’ll always point it out when we watch film.”

But don’t get it twisted. Dickerson does get vocal — just not very often.

“I’m methodical most of the times with my shouting,” Dickerson said. “If I yell, the kids’ ears will always perk up because they don’t hear it too often. It means a little more when you’re not yelling all the time.”

If a player does make a mistake, Dickerson will take them aside and talk to them about it.

And his players appreciate it.

“It makes everybody more comfortable,” Knauf said. “He’ll just pull people to the side. We’re not really pressured with him always yelling in our face.”

2011 Swim Team

What a season! This year’s SFC varsity boys and girls swim team has come a long way; with all swimmers achieving personal records throughout the season even a school record was broken in the girls 100 yard butterfly by freshman Rachel Ringley. The boys varsity team had enough swimmers to have not only one but two relay teams while the girls had its first relay team in a long time. Seven out of th…e eleven team members were freshmen leaving one sophomore, one junior, and two seniors. This weekend come out and show your SFC spirit and cheer on the two members of the team who qualified to compete in the 1A Regionals swim meet at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando. Good luck to Sabrina Ceniza swimming the 100 butterfly and the 100 breast stroke and Rachel Ringley swimming the 100 and 200 freestyle. See you on the deck. Go Santa Fe Hawks!

LAKELAND | Santa Fe Catholic has many unknowns coming into this season, but there is one given — B.J. Knauf.
The senior quarterback and state champion sprinter in the 200, who has committed to Purdue as a running back, rushed for 1,508 and 18 yards last year and is poised to have an even bigger season this year.

But Santa Fe’s success has less to do with how well Knauf plays and more to do with how much second-year coach Bill Dickerson gets from the supporting cast. And a lot of that supporting cast is new.

The Crimson Hawks had 28 players last year and graduated 12, eight of whom started on both sides of the ball. The team had just 18 in the spring, but the roster has since grown to about 30 players.

“We’re so young,” Knauf said. “We lost so many players. It’s like a new everything.”

One key player who isn’t new — but might has well be — is running back Robert Aranda. Dickerson expected Aranda to be an impact player last year, but an injury wiped out nearly the entire season.

Aranda will play fullback or tailback on offense and linebacker on defense.

“I look for a lot of good stuff out of Robert,” Dickerson said. “He definitely is one of our bright spots on both sides of the ball.”

And as a soccer standout, Aranda also will handle the kicking chores. He showed what he could do when he came back for Santa Fe’s victory over Lakeland Christian.

“It felt good to hit someone again,” he said.

Jake Dotson (6-3, 170), a soccer standout who decided to come out for football, and transfer Cyrano Crooks are new at receiver, and Dickerson is expecting more out of the passing game this year.

Last season, Knauf threw for just 427 yards. Dickerson said, however, that by the end of the season Knauf was looking more for receivers to throw to as he rolled out, rather than automatically tuck the ball and run.

Dickerson said it’s important for more players to step up and contribute on offense to take some of the load off Knauf.

“It’s huge, especially this year because we’re so young and we have so much turnover,” Dickerson said. “You just can’t be a one-man show in football.”

Dickerson’s offensive line also was battered by turnover, and he is expecting a lot from senior Kristian Kabbabe. He’s making the transition from fullback to the line but has plenty of football experience. He’s expected to provide leadership along with fellow senior Sam McNally.
